Iran, Iraq agree to construct railway linking Shalamcheh, Basra cities

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrbash has said that Iran and neighboring Iraq will soon begin a project to construct a railway that will connect Iran’s Shalamcheh city to the Iraqi city of Basra.

The official made the announcement on Wednesday after talks with Iraqi Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi in Tehran.

Bazrbash said that the project will be launched after the holy fasting month of Ramadan that will end on April 21, without giving an exact date.

He explained that a mine clearing operation will be carried out at the first stage of the project, and after that Iraq will launch the construction of the 32-kilometer railway between Shalamcheh and Basra.

Simultaneously, Iran will begin the construction of a moveable bridge over the Shatt al-Arab river that exists in the path of the railway, Bazrbash said, adding that the two sides agreed to complete the whole project within a year and a half.
